The Almeida Theatre has an international reputation and hosts original works in its small, intimate studio of 325-seats. It also produces many acclaimed West End transfers. It is an ambitious North London theatre famous for its vision of helping to create the next generation of British artists for the global stage.

The theatre’s reputable outreach programme works with local schools to encourage young people to get involved in performance arts. The Almeida’s ‘Participation’ programme – divided into Young Artists, Young Audiences and Community – reached a staggering 6,140 young people in 2016/17.

Now an industry powerhouse, the theatre began its existence as a literary and scientific society in the London Borough of Islington. The building was constructed in 1837 and comprised of a library, lecture theatre and laboratory performing investigations of the wider world.

Having been derelict in later years the building re-opened as a theatre in 1980, and by 2000 had received a £1.5 million award from the Arts Council of England to perform crucial repairs to the building. It was subsequently awarded National Lottery funding for a full and comprehensive restoration of the venue, which led to the building receiving a Grade II listed status.

Taking its name from the street on which it stands, the Almeida aims to showcase brave innovative work that asks big questions: of plays, of theatre and of the world around us. Selected as London Theatre of The Year at The Stage Awards 2018, The Almeida Theatre is one of the most exciting theatres in the city.
