Palace Theatre, Manchester, is one of the best-recognised theatres in Manchester. It has hosted some of the biggest transfers in recent musical history and is a main cultural venue for theatre-goers in the North of England.

The theatre opened in 1891 and was originally known as the Grand Old Lady of Oxford Street (after its position on Oxford Street) and was designed by architect Alfred Darbyshire. However, the theatre wasn’t well received and was renovated by famous architect Bertie Crewe in 1913 to reduce the capacity and improve interiors. The years following these renovations saw the glory years for the Palace Theatre with names such as Gracie Fields, Judy Garland, Noël Coward, and Laurel and Hardy gracing its stage.

The theatre was hit by a direct bomb during the Manchester Blitz of World War II. Despite being partially reconstructed and having a number of notable shows in the following era, audience numbers fell dramatically. It was threatened with closure during the 1970s but was saved by the Arts Council and underwent major renovations.
