The Richmond Theatre is a London theatre, adjacent to Richmond Green in the south west of the city. It’s one of the pinnacle examples of the work of theatre architect Frank Matcham and is now a Grade II listed building.Built in 1899 as the Theatre Royal and Opera House, the theatre’s seating is traditionally arranged, and has a mixture of detailing and plush red fabrics. The exterior of the theatre and the auditorium have been used as the set for many famous films including Evita, Topsy-Turvy and Finding Neverland. In the early 1990s, the theatre had major renovations, including an extension to provide the audience with more space, and the addition of the Matcham Room. With new renovations came a new era for the theatre in which it presented weekly performances from professional touring companies. There is a traditional Christmas and New Year pantomime held at the theatre, and the venue is considered amongst the best places to see Britain’s greatest music hall and pantomime stars. The Richmond Theatre presents an eclectic range of high-quality dramas, musicals, opera, dance and family entertainment each year. They also provide educational events to schools, undertaking workshops and activities to get young people involved in the theatre.
