The Savoy Theatre is a West End theatre on the historic Strand, in Westminster. The theatre first opened its doors in 1881 on the site of what was the Savoy Palace, a grand house for noblemen of medieval London. This venue is embedded into the history of the city’s theatre and is also a Grade II listed building.

The Savoy Theatre was the first non-domestic building in the world to be lit entirely by electricity, and was met with widespread acclaim on its opening. The building was designed by the famous theatre architect C. J. Phipps, who created the large auditorium that was (and still is) renowned for its large proscenium arch and four-tier seating.

The theatre was built by Richard D’Oyly Carte, the theatre impresario who established the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, which was the in-house company at the theatre for many years. Patience was the first show to premiere at the venue, and the last eight of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic operas premiered there also.

The theatre gained a reputation for hosting numerous famous premieres including, The Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan; Salome by Oscar Wilde; and Blithe Spirit by Noël Coward. In more recent times, the Savoy Theatre is well-recognised as a premium theatre that presents operas, dramas, Shakespeare and popular musicals.
