Cheltenham Playhouse was founded in April 1945 making it the only new theatre in the UK to begin operating during World War II. Formerly a home for local amateur theatre, the venue now presents a mix of professional and community drama and musical theatre, live music, comedy, burlesque and film, while also offering daytime and evening community interest activities from parent and toddler groups and choirs to its own drama school, Theatre Studio. The building itself dates back to 1806, making it one of the oldest surviving spa buildings in the town, as it was set up as a baths and salts laboratory; a later addition was a 75 ft long swimming pool which still exists beneath the auditorium.
